The University of Aveiro (UA), through IEETA and under the leadership of researcher Joaquim Sousa Pinto, is spearheading the development of an automated voter registration system for São Tomé e Príncipe. The project follows recommendations from the EU Election Observation Mission and aims to modernize the country’s electoral system by connecting national databases such as civil registration, ID cards, and passports.
The system will automatically register new voters and remove deceased individuals through machine-to-machine communication between institutional systems. UA is also creating digital tools for voters and election officials, including a web platform and a mobile app for submitting results.
This project, developed in partnership with the University of Minho and funded by the European Union, will also include technical training for local staff, contributing to the country’s long-term electoral autonomy and transparency.
