The University of Aveiro (UA) hosted the 3rd edition of the UA Awards Ceremony, an event that honours excellence in the academic community. Highlights included IEETA researcher Joaquim Sousa Pinto, who was awarded the Cooperation Prize, and the honourable mention of the TAG prize awarded to the UA Cybersecurity Office team, coordinated by IEETA researcher João Rafael Almeida.
The Renato Araújo Auditorium once again celebrated the academic community with the UA Awards, which took place on the afternoon of 17 April. Paulo Jorge Ferreira, rector of the UA, recalled the importance of this day, an initiative that he says he always joins “with the greatest of pleasure”.
“The University of Aveiro depends on the dedication and talent of those who work here in the most diverse areas,” and it was “thanks to the work of many that we have got to where we are, and it is important and right that we recognise this,” he said.
Of the 37 applications received, the University of Aveiro awarded six prizes and seven honourable mentions, including the Good Pedagogical Practices Prize, the UA Researcher Prize, the Cooperation Prize and the TAG Prize. A Professor Emeritus was also honoured.
Concerning the Cooperation Award, “The University of Aveiro is fulfilling one of its fundamental missions: to contribute to the development of innovative products, processes and services that qualify the economic and social fabric and contribute to the development of the region, the country and beyond,” said João Veloso, Vice-Rector of the UA, emphasising the importance of this award and giving it in three categories. In the Industrial Modernisation and Digitalisation category, the winner was Joaquim Sousa Pinto, for leading the team that developed a system for cataloguing and selling birth records electronically in São Tomé and Príncipe.
This ceremony was also special for the two Emeritus Professor titles that were awarded. “Today we are doing more than awarding prizes for work done over the last few years. We are also honouring people who have left an indelible mark on the University of Aveiro throughout their careers,” said the UA rector. Professors Isabel Alarcão and Helena Nazaré, also former rectors of the Academy, were therefore awarded the titles of Professor Emeritus.
