Speaker: Bernardo Marques is a Research Assistant at the Institute of Electronics and Informatics Engineering of Aveiro – IEETA. Current research interests span over several fields, including Human-Centered Computing (HCC), Human-Centered Design (HCD), Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), Computer-Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW), Virtual, Augmented, Mixed and eXtended Reality (VR, AR, MR, XR), 3D User Interfaces (3DUI), User Experience (UX), Information Visualization (IV), and others.
Abstract: In this talk, Bernardo will briefly introduce the theme of his PhD, concluded in 2021, and provide a list of relevant topics that may inspire new PhD students, despite their field of research. He will address why he decided to pursue a PhD, and present some advice regarding how to select a topic of interest, where to get a scholarship, how to select a supervisor, or how to start writing a research plan.
Bernardo will also elaborate on how to write a cover and a rebuttal letter, how to react when receiving a first rejection, as well as propose a list of relevant tools that may facilitate how to write publications. Also relevant, discuss the importance of keeping the thesis document up to date, advice for conducting a great pitch, as well as the importance of going beyond the PhD topic and acquire new skills.
