The Rector of the University of Aveiro (UA), Paulo Jorge Ferreira (researcher at IEETA), was elected today as president of the Council of Rectors of Portuguese Universities (CRUP). For the next three years, Paulo Jorge Ferreira will lead the body that represents an important part of the national higher education system.
Paulo Jorge Ferreira was elected Rector of the UA on March 13, 2018 for the first term and on May 2, 2022 for the second term. He holds a PhD in Electrical Engineering and is a Full Professor at the Department of Electronics, Telecommunications and Informatics at UA, where he was director between February 2015 and February 2018.
In addition to his experience as a professor and researcher at UA, he has experience in departmental management and management positions, course direction, scientific committees, evaluation committees, the UA General Council, the UA Performance Evaluation Coordinating Council, the UA Doctoral School Council and the direction of doctoral programs in national and international consortiums.
The 14 public universities are part of the CRUP, in addition to the Catholic University of Portugal and the Military University Institute. All institutions have a vote when it comes to choosing the head of the body that will represent all institutions, among other instances, to the Government for the next three years.
CRUP’s responsibilities include ensuring the coordination and global representation of the institutions represented in it, as well as collaborating in the formulation of national education, science and culture policies. It is also up to the CRUP to pronounce on budgetary issues and legislative projects that directly concern public university education.
