The 12th Iberian Conference on Pattern Recognition and Image Analysis (IbPRIA 2025), held in Coimbra from June 30 to July 3, 2025, was a success for IEETA’s young researchers, with two of our students receiving prestigious awards.
Vasco Gomes, a master’s student, was awarded Best Student Paper for his work “On the Correction of GFS Wind Speed Forecasts in Portugal Using LSTM Networks”. This study, part of his master’s thesis supervised by Sónia Gouveia and David Carvalho, explores the use of LSTM to improve wind speed forecasts from the Global Forecast System (GFS), enhancing weather prediction accuracy for the Portuguese region.
Miguel Carvalho, a PhD student, received the Best Student Honorable Paper Award for his research “Informed Decision Making Strategy for Resampling in Pain Assessment”. Co-authored by Daniela Pais, Raquel Sebastião, Armando J. Pinho, and Susana Brás, this work proposes a novel resampling algorithm — Genetic Beta Oversampling — that incorporates user-defined preferences to enhance recall-sensitivity balance, such as pain assessment in healthcare settings. The method demonstrated superior performance compared to established techniques in clinical decision-making scenarios.
We congratulate Vasco, Miguel, and all co-authors for their contributions and for representing IEETA in the pattern recognition community.
