A new book authored by Professor Francisco Vaz, titled Codificação de fala para Telecomunicações (2024), has been published by UA Editora and is now available in open access on our Institutional Repository (RIA).
The book provides a chronological overview of human speech coding systems, from the PCM system of the early 1970s to the latest internationally defined systems. It explores digital technologies from a signal processing perspective, detailing algorithms and key bibliographical references.
A limited number of paperback copies were produced, with one donated by Professor Vaz to the IEETA research unit. Francisco Vaz played a key role in the founding of INESC Aveiro and was instrumental in the development of IEETA. Since 2008, he is a retired Full Professor of Electrical Engineering at the UA, where he focused his teaching and research on signal processing, particularly in biological signals. Throughout his career, he held several leadership roles in university management, including Vice-Rector for scientific research and technology transfer.
