Description
Jorge Miguel Silva is a researcher at IEETA and at the Department of Electronics, Telecommunications and Informatics of the University of Aveiro.
His research sits between computer science and the life sciences. He is interested in how to extract knowledge from biological and medical data, and his work draws on information theory, data compression and machine learning.
Much of this data, from genomes to patient records, is personal and cannot be freely shared. A large part of his work deals with this tension between opening data to research and protecting the people it describes. He develops methods and software that let researchers analyse data held at different institutions without the data ever leaving them, and contributes to European research infrastructures that put this into practice.
He also works on more theoretical questions, using algorithmic information theory to study complexity and what it means for data to have structure.
