New Details

Today, we celebrate a special occasion: the 25th anniversary of the Institute of Electronics and Informatics Engineering of Aveiro, IEETA. For the past 25 years, IEETA has been a place of innovation, hard work, and important contributions to science and society.

However, our journey started before that, in 1985, with a primary focus on information technologies in healthcare (TIAAS), to tackle challenges that have since evolved and deepened. In 1994, the INESC Aveiro building came to life, symbolizing our growing ambition and stature. The same year, we were recognized as a research unit (UI FCT 127/94), solidifying our place in the broader scientific community.

In 1999, we became IEETA, and since then, we have continued to grow, expanding our horizons, and exploring new realms of electronics, informatics, and interdisciplinary applications. Our work has been fueled by the vision of dedicated coordinators who have guided us through different eras. From the foundational leadership of Pedro Guedes de Oliveira and Francisco Vaz in our earliest days, to António Sousa Pereira, who led the institute through the transition from INESC to IEETA, and to more recent leaders such as Paulo Jorge Ferreira, Armando Pinho, and currently, José Luís Oliveira. Their foresight and commitment have been crucial in shaping our identity.

But the heart of IEETA is not just the buildings or leadership, it is the people. Over the years, our researchers, students, and partners have worked together to solve real-world problems in areas like intelligent robotics, health, artificial intelligence, and computer science. Through their hard work, IEETA has had a real impact on people’s lives and has helped advance knowledge in many fields.

As we celebrate our past today, we also look to the future. The world is changing fast, and new challenges lie ahead. Together, we will continue this journey, ensuring that IEETA stays at the forefront of research and innovation for many years.

On the 16th of October, we will gather to reflect on all we have achieved and to plan for the future. Today, let us take a moment to celebrate everyone who has been part of this journey.
