Description
I am an Assistant Professor in the Department of Electronics, Telecommunications and Informatics at the University of Aveiro, where I also conduct research and manage data science projects at IEETA. My background in Applied Mathematics to Technology and my PhD in Biomedical Sciences from the University of Porto underpin a career combining quantitative methods, technology and health.
My research focuses on information extraction from multimodal data, physiological signal processing and machine learning, with applications in affective computing, pain assessment and biometric identification. I have worked on data quality, class imbalance, missing data and the complexity of classification tasks. I believe that useful models require rigorous data collection, organisation and analysis, alongside an understanding of the context in which they support decisions.
I combine this work with undergraduate and master’s-level teaching in signal processing, biomedical signal processing and machine learning. I have experience coordinating teams and projects with academic and industry partners, from defining the strategy to evaluating and communicating results. I value mentoring, clear communication, and equity in team management. I also serve as Chair of the Ethics Committee for Clinical Research at the University of Aveiro, a board member of the Portuguese Pattern Recognition Association, and as an ambassador for Geek Girls Portugal.
