Activity and Participation Levels of People With Aphasia: Development of Portuguese Assessment Tools (Níveis de Actividade e Participação das Pessoas com Afasia: Desenvolvimento de Instrumentos de Avaliação Portugueses)

This project intends to develop an European Portuguese outcome measure that allows the evaluation of the consequences of aphasia in the daily life of patients, in the different dimensions considered in the ICF (2001). We will consider current theoretical models in this area, providing Portuguese Speech and Language Therapists with more effective evaluation/intervention methods and contributing to the improvement of well-being and the standards of quality of life of these individuals. The final goal of a Speech and Language Therapist's evaluation and intervention is the improvement of the quality of life of patients with aphasia, their relatives and friends. However, given the lack of measurement tools in Portugal that allow clinicians to better understand the consequences of aphasia for patients' daily activities and participation levels, there is the need to develop tools that allows defining a communication disability profile, prior to a direct evaluation of the implications of aphasia in their quality of life.

Uma das consequências dos acidentes vasculares cerebrais (AVC) é a afasia, uma perturbação da linguagem causada por lesão cerebral. Os modelos de intervenção mais actuais nesta área centram-se em aspectos funcionais e sociais, valorizando além dos défices linguísticos referidos, as suas consequências psicossociais e consequentemente o bem-estar e a qualidade de vida de quem a apresenta. A Organização Mundial de Saúde realça a necessidade de considerar as implicações de uma doença nos seus diferentes domínios, nomeadamente nas modalidades linguísticas e processos mentais do indivíduo, assim como o impacto dos défices residuais no seu desempenho em actividades diárias e participação em situações da vida real. Surge, à semelhança do que ocorreu noutros países, a necessidade de desenvolver instrumentos de avaliação, adaptados à realidade portuguesa, que vão de encontro a estas concepções. Neste projecto será desenvolvida uma bateria de testes de avaliação, que permitam medir níveis de deficiência, actividade e participação.
