Biomedical Video Technology

Video technology has been reaching more and more applications in Medicine and Biology. SIAS has made several contributions to this topic. Historically, we created one of the first fully digital video-biosignal system which was sold in 1998 to a Dutch company. Furthermore, this technology has been, for the first time, adapted to psychophysiology studies under the development of the BioDreams video-polygraph system in cooperation with the Dep. of Psychology of the University of Minho, in Braga, Portugal.

We have been also highly active in Movement Quantification in Epilepsy where we were the first group to publish results of the quantity of movement during seizures on different parts of a patients body. This research has evolved to several clinical studies with our clinical partners and was awarded with the Best Contribution in Epileptology Award delivered at the European Congress on Epileptology 2002 by the European Epilepsy Academy (EUREPA).

The Qmov experience and technology developed within the group led us to approach the complex problem of automating single particle tracking in con-focal microscopy.

Another exciting R&D activity has been the approach to capsule endoscopy. This tiny device, of the size of a vitamin pill, is the first autonomous micro-machine with large-scale use inside the human body. It transmits by RF two images per second while travelling our intestine track during 7 hours, reaching areas inaccessible before by classical push endoscopy. The main problem is the processing (still done visually by MDs) of all this looooonnnnnnggggg videos. Its here where we came in 2004 developing our own CapView tool and researched several algorithms to make this task easier for doctors.
