Surgical resection of the epileptogenic
zone can be an effective treatment for some patients with medically
intractable focal epilepsies. The process of presurgical evaluation
aims at the exact localization of the epileptogenic zone and its
relation to eloquent cortex.
Usually the whole range of available imaging methods like computed tomography
(CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), positron emission tomography (PET) and
single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) is utilized. Each imaging
modality will reveal different structural or physiological characteristics of
the brain and thus can contribute complementary information, reflecting different
aspects of the complex pathopysiologic network of epileptogenicity.
However, the integrated threedimensional visualization of several neuroimaging
and electrophysiological examinations is of additional value for anatomically
detailled planning of resective surgery.
The application of image registration and 3D volume rendering is described for
improvements within single modalities as well as for multimodal visualization. |
