Some Information About Aveiro
Aveiro is located on
the Atlantic coast of Portugal, about 240 km North of Lisbon and 80 km South of
Oporto. Famous for its lagoon, the town is crisscrossed by canals where colourfully
painted moliceiro boats sail. The salt and the lagoon are already mentioned in documents
dating back to the year 959.
Deserving a special mention: Cathedral (15th-18th centuries) and Gothic cross; Misericórdia
Church and São Bartolomeu Chapel; 18th century churches of Santo António
and São Gonçalo. Regional Museum, housed in the ancient Convento de
Jesus.
The closest sand beaches are Barra and Costa Nova (about 6 km from downtown). The
local Tourist Office
will be pleased to help you.
The weather is mild and the temperature rarely exceeds 30°C in the Summer, or
drops below 10°C in the Winter. For more information about the current weather
check the Instituto de Meteorologia de
Portugal.
