A great number of medicine specialties use the medical images in their diagnoses. The digital analysis of the images allows diagnoses with more quality. The Dentistry uses the dental x-rays to evaluate the progression of some orthodontal pathologies.

Periodontitis is an ortodontal disease that can be diagnosed during a dental regular examination, but it is clarified with the analysis of dental x-rays. The main characteristics of the periodonditis are the bleeding and the retraction of the gums and the bone loss. In extreme cases, occurs the loss of the teeth because the height of the gums is not enough to support them.

In Radiology and in other areas, the use of computers is very important because it permit the digital processing of the x-ray images. The computer allows manipulating the digital x-rays, in order highlight or to retrieve its main features. The x-rays can be stored in hard disks, in order to save physical space in the archive.

The images can be reproduced and transmitted to other distant places, in a fast and safe way. The share of clinical information allows discussing about the clinical state of the patients, improving the quality of the diagnosis.

The extraction of the teeth contours is considered  to be an essential step in the analysis of the dental x-ray images. In our work, we studied some techniques to extract the teeth contours.

The DIA Tool was developed for analyzing and organizing in a database the dental x-ray images. This tool can extract the tooth contours and measure the bone loss of teeth. Moreover this tool can be easily adapted to other tasks.

In this site you can learn more about DIA Tool and you can freely download a demo version. If you have any suggestions, please contact us.
